Active coupled-resonator optical waveguides. I. Gain enhancement and noise
نویسنده
چکیده
We use a tight-binding formalism in the time domain to analyze the effect of resonant gain enhancement and spontaneous emission noise in amplifying coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs). We find the net amplification of a wave propagating in a CROW does not always vary with the group velocity, and depends strongly on the termination and excitation of these structures. The signal-to-noise ratio and noise figure of CROW amplifiers are derived in the tight-binding formalism as well. The physical interpretations and practical consequences of the theoretical results are discussed. © 2007 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 230.5750, 250.4480, 140.3290.

Fundamental limitations to gain enhancement in periodic media and waveguides.
A common strategy to compensate for losses in optical nanostructures is to add gain material in the system. By exploiting slow-light effects it is expected that the gain may be enhanced beyond its bulk value. Here we show that this route cannot be followed uncritically: inclusion of gain inevitably modifies the underlying dispersion law, and thereby may degrade the slow-light properties underly...
متن کاملActive coupled-resonator optical waveguides. II. Current injection InP–InGaAsP Fabry–Perot resonator arrays
We investigate active, electrically pumped coupled-resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) in the form of InP–InGaAsP Fabry–Perot resonator arrays. We discuss the fabrication of these devices and present measurements of the transmission spectra. The signal-to-noise ratio is found to be a strong function of wavelength and degraded rapidly along the resonator chain away from the input. Our results h...
متن کاملImproving the Triple Coupled Ring-Resonator Performance as an Optical Filter
In this paper, a three ring-resonator serially coupled is considered as an optical filter. We are going to improve the performance of the designed optical filter by increasing the quality factor and finesse of filtered wavelengths. The first and last rings are coupled to the bus waveguides that carry the input and output fields. The effect of coupling parameters and ring radii on the filtering ...
متن کاملMode-locking of monolithic laser diodes incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides.
We investigate the operational principle of mode-locking in monolithic semiconductor lasers incorporating coupled-resonator optical waveguides. The size of mode-locked lasers operating at tens of GHz repetition frequencies can be drastically reduced owing to the significantly decreased group velocity of light. The dynamics of such devices are analyzed numerically based on a coupled-oscillator m...
متن کاملAll-optical switching, bistability, and slow-light transmission in photonic crystal waveguide-resonator structures.
We analyze the resonant linear and nonlinear transmission through a photonic crystal waveguide side-coupled to a Kerr-nonlinear photonic crystal resonator. First, we extend the standard coupled-mode theory analysis to photonic crystal structures and obtain explicit analytical expressions for the bistability thresholds and transmission coefficients which provide the basis for a detailed understa...
